Facilities not incinerating medical waste on-site must package, contain, and separate medical waste categories into appropriately labeled containers with biohazard symbols or "medical waste" text at least 1 inch high.

Medical waste cannot be compacted or mixed with other materials before decontamination and disposal, except decontaminated medical waste may be mixed if clearly labeled.

Medical waste stored outside the facility must be in a secured area or locked container weighing over 500 pounds, protected from vermin and unauthorized access, with a maximum storage period of 90 days on premises.

Cultures and stocks contaminated with infectious agents must be stored in closed, puncture-resistant containers, decontaminated by autoclaving or incineration, and disposed of in sanitary landfills.

Blood and body fluids may be disposed of by flushing down sanitary sewers, autoclaving or incineration, solidifying, transfer to sanitary landfills, or department-approved processes.

Sharps must be placed in rigid, puncture-resistant containers and transported to sanitary landfills within one year or when filled, whichever occurs first, or alternatively incinerated or decontaminated and ground until unrecognizable.
