Michigan Department of State Police was first organized as the Michigan State Troops Permanent Force in 1917 and achieved permanent status in 1919, serving domestic security, traffic patrol, rural law enforcement, and prohibition enforcement.

Department developed the Michigan Public Safety Communications System, recognized as the largest public safety communications system in North America.

Post-9/11, the director was designated as State Director of Homeland Security, and the department instituted a regional policing plan to increase patrol visibility and respond to emerging crime trends.

Michigan State Police created the Biometrics and Identification Division and became the first state to establish this organizational concentration following FBI's lead; also became linked to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).

Senate extends tribute to the Michigan Department of State Police for its 95-year history of professionalism, with recognition of diverse leadership including the first African-American director (2003), first Hispanic director (2006), and first female director (2010).
