Qualified health plans offered through Michigan's health benefit exchange cannot provide coverage for elective abortions as standard coverage.

Individuals, organizations, and employers may purchase optional supplemental coverage for elective abortion outside the exchange if they pay an additional premium.

Expense-incurred hospital, medical, or surgical policies and health maintenance organization contracts offered outside an exchange cannot cover elective abortions except through an optional rider purchased with an additional premium.

Employers purchasing optional abortion coverage riders must notify each employee that elective abortion coverage is included and that covered dependents may use it without employee notification.

Elective abortion is defined as intentional termination of pregnancy for purposes other than preserving the woman's life or health, increasing probability of live birth, or removing a dead fetus; excludes contraceptive use and medically necessary terminations to avert death.
