HB 4598 Summary

• Adds Section 213a to the Michigan Penal Code to criminalize coercing a pregnant female to have an abortion against her will.

• Prohibits committing, attempting, or threatening assaultive crimes or violations of sections 411h or 411i with intent to coerce abortion.

• Prohibits discontinuing legal support, withdrawing from contracts, or discharging from employment after being informed the pregnant female does not want an abortion.

• Establishes penalties of misdemeanor fines up to $5,000 for subsection (1)(b) violations, or up to $10,000 if the perpetrator is the father/putative father and the pregnant individual is under 18 years old.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment.
