Full-time firefighters in Michigan may volunteer for or seek part-time and paid on-call employment with another fire department if it does not conflict with their primary employment duties as determined by their original employer.

Full-time firefighters are prohibited from accepting full-time employment with another fire department.

Local governments cannot adopt ordinances, rules, or policies that prohibit firefighters from volunteering or obtaining paid on-call work with another fire department.

Collective bargaining agreements between public employers and employee representatives cannot include provisions prohibiting firefighters from volunteering or obtaining paid on-call employment with other fire departments.

The act became effective immediately upon the Governor's approval on October 15, 2014.
