Schools must not hold classes on the Friday before Labor Day.

School districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies must not begin their school year before Labor Day, except as provided in subsections (3) through (6).

Schools operating under a collective bargaining agreement with a calendar that does not comply with the Labor Day start requirement are exempt until that agreement expires.

Year-round schools and international baccalaureate academies operating as of September 29, 2005, and schools beginning year-round operations after that date (upon waiver approval) are exempt from the Labor Day start requirement.

Schools may offer professional development for personnel before Labor Day, and "Labor Day" is defined as the first Monday in September.
