Prohibits public employers from requiring employees to reside within a specified geographic area or distance/travel time from their workplace as a condition of employment or promotion.

Allows public employers to require employees to reside within 20 miles or greater distance from the nearest boundary of the employer.

Exempts married employees whose spouse works for another public employer and is subject to a residency requirement of less than 20 miles.

Exempts volunteer firefighters, paid on-call firefighters, elected officials, and unpaid appointed officials from residency requirements.

Allows municipalities to require newly hired employees to reside within municipal boundaries for up to 7 years after employment begins.
