Villages and cities with populations under 30,000 (based on 2010 census) may allow golf carts on streets by resolution; townships with populations under 30,000 may do so unless disapproved by county board of commissioners after a hearing.

County boards of commissioners may disapprove golf cart operations in townships if they determine operation would cause significant environmental damage or public safety concerns, with at least 45 days' notice required to the township.

Golf cart operators must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid motor vehicle license; carts are limited to 15 miles per hour and cannot be operated on streets with speed limits exceeding 30 miles per hour except for crossing.

Golf carts cannot be operated on state trunk line highways (except to cross using the most direct line), sidewalks, or during the period from one-half hour before sunset to one-half hour after sunrise.

Golf carts operated under this section are not required to be registered for motor vehicle insurance purposes and do not need to meet low-speed vehicle safety requirements.
