HB 5355 Summary

• Amends Michigan's concealed pistol law to prohibit licensed individuals from carrying concealed pistols on premises of schools, child care facilities, sports arenas, bars/taverns, places of worship, entertainment facilities with 2,500+ seating capacity, hospitals, and college/university dormitories or classrooms.

• Allows exceptions to these prohibitions for retired law enforcement officers, security personnel employed by restricted entities, private investigators, corrections officers, motor carrier officers, sheriff's posse members, auxiliary/reserve officers, probation/parole officers, state court judges, court officers, and individuals with active personal protection orders.

• Clarifies that parents or legal guardians may carry concealed pistols while in vehicles on school property solely for dropping off or picking up students.

• Exempts parking areas from the no-carry zone restrictions.

• Establishes penalties for violations: first offense is a civil infraction with up to $500 fine and 6-month license suspension; second offense is a misdemeanor with up to $1,000 fine and license revocation; third or subsequent offense is a felony punishable by up to 4 years imprisonment and/or $5,000 fine with license revocation.
