HB 5450 Summary

• Amends the definition of "firearm" to include any weapon designed to or readily convertible to expel a projectile by explosive action, removing the previous exclusion for spring/gas/air-powered BB guns under .177 caliber.

• Allows persons to lawfully possess firearms greater than 26 inches in length as pistols if registered before January 1, 2013, continuously maintained registration since then, and possess a copy of the original license or record.

• Permits firearm owners meeting the above conditions to elect to have their registered firearm not be considered a pistol by notifying the Michigan Department of State Police.

• Takes effect January 1, 2015.
