HB 5601 Summary

• Prohibits the storage or disposal of radioactive waste in Michigan, with exceptions for spent fuel rods at nuclear power plants, waste at educational institutions, uranium tailings from in-state mining, medical/research facilities, and low-level waste under certain conditions.

• Prevents importation of Class A and Class B radioactive waste generated outside Michigan and prohibits all Class C waste storage or disposal in the state.

• Creates the Great Lakes Protection Radioactive Waste Advisory Board consisting of 9 members including technical experts, tribal representatives, industry and environmental representatives, and state officials.

• Requires the advisory board to submit a report within 1 year assessing potential public health, natural resource, cultural, archaeological, and historical impacts in the Great Lakes basin from the proposed deep geologic repository at the Bruce nuclear site in Ontario, including at least 3 public hearings in affected Michigan areas.

• Repeals the advisory board 1 year and 90 days after the section's effective date.
