House Bill 6081 Summary

• Establishes the "Law Enforcement Integrity Act" to require investigation of crimes allegedly committed by law enforcement officers in Michigan.

• Law enforcement agencies must investigate alleged crimes by their officers; if the accused officer is employed by the investigating agency, the case must be forwarded to the Department of State Police instead.

• When a local law enforcement agency develops reasonable suspicion that an officer committed a crime during their investigation, they must forward all evidence and conclusions to the Department of State Police.

• The Department of State Police must investigate allegations and, if reasonable suspicion exists, forward findings to the appropriate prosecuting attorney and the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, with quarterly status updates until investigation or prosecution concludes.

• The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards must maintain files of all reports received under this act for the duration of the officer's certification.
