Director of natural resources may designate trails as "Pure Michigan Trails" if they meet 11 criteria including state or governmental ownership, public safety standards, non-discriminatory access, and official signage.

Director may designate water trails as "Pure Michigan Water Trails" if located on contiguous waterways, open to public use, designed according to best management practices, and meet applicable criteria for land trails.

Cities, villages, or townships may be designated "Pure Michigan Trail Towns" upon petition if easily accessible to trail users, have adopted supporting resolution, created support service plans, and demonstrate community support through at least 3 specified conditions.

Department shall establish a statewide trail network including Pure Michigan Trails, Pure Michigan Water Trails, and other recreational trails, with network specifications published on department website and updated as needed.

Department shall develop and maintain a public database of trail maps on its website and work with interested parties to create a mobile software application for downloading trail maps and related information.
