Amends the definition of "firearm" to mean any weapon designed to, will, or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by action of an explosive, removing previous language that referenced gas or air propulsion.

Removes the exemption for smooth bore rifles or handguns designed exclusively for propelling BBs not exceeding .177 caliber by spring, gas, or air from the definition of firearm.

Allows persons who registered firearms longer than 26 inches as pistols before January 1, 2013 to continue possessing them as pistols if they maintained continuous registration without lapse and possess a copy of the original license or record.

Permits persons meeting the conditions of subsection (2) to elect to have their firearm no longer considered a pistol by notifying the Michigan Department of State Police.

Takes effect January 1, 2015.
