Beginning January 1, 2019, a person shall not sell or offer for promotional purposes any personal care product containing plastic microbeads in Michigan.

Plastic microbead is defined as an intentionally added plastic particle that is 5 millimeters or less in every dimension.

The prohibition does not apply to personal care products containing plastic microbeads in less than 1 part per million (ppm) by weight.

Violations may result in civil fines of up to $2,500 per day for each personal care product subject to the violation, enforced by county prosecuting attorneys or the attorney general.

The prosecuting attorney or attorney general may bring injunctive relief actions in court against persons violating or preparing to violate the microbead prohibition.
