Health professionals licensed to provide primary care (family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology) must comply with hepatitis C testing requirements under the new section 20154.

Health care providers must offer hepatitis C testing to individuals born between 1946 and 1964 who are receiving health care services, unless the patient is in a life-threatening emergency, has previously been offered or tested, or lacks capacity to consent.

Hepatitis C testing requirement applies to health professionals in primary care, hospitals, and freestanding surgical outpatient facilities.

The Department of Public Health must establish rules prescribing how hepatitis C testing offers must be made in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.

The bill does not change the scope of practice for health care providers or prevent them from offering hepatitis C testing outside the targeted age group when clinically indicated.
