Drivers transporting children must properly secure them in child restraint systems meeting federal standards (49 CFR 571.213).

Children must be positioned based on weight and age: rear-facing seats for children weighing ≤30 pounds or <2 years old; forward-facing seats for children 30-50 pounds or 2-5 years old; booster seats for children ≤57 inches tall weighing ≥50 pounds or 5-10 years old.

Children must be seated in rear seats when available; front seat placement permitted only when all rear seats occupied or if rear-facing seat with deactivated front airbag.

Operators and front-seat passengers must wear properly adjusted safety belts; violation is a civil infraction with no points assessed and no abstract submitted to Secretary of State.

Safety belt enforcement limited to secondary action when compliance is below 80% unless driver detained for other violation; failure to wear belt may reduce damage recovery by up to 5%.
