School bus drivers must stop between 15 and 50 feet from railroad tracks, activate hazard lights, turn off interior switches, open doors/windows, and listen and look both directions before proceeding.

Drivers must cross railroad tracks in a single gear without shifting gears while traversing the crossing.

Stops are not required at inactive railroad tracks (completely paved over or removed with all warning devices removed), on freeways with deactivated signals/gates, or at crossings marked with "exempt" signs.

Stops are not required when a uniformed police officer or traffic control signal directs traffic to proceed.

Violations constitute a civil infraction subject to a fine of up to $100 and are processed under the Michigan Vehicle Code.
