Law enforcement agencies created by public bodies must fund operations with public funds only and maintain liability insurance.

Agencies must establish written policies covering officer authority, geographic jurisdiction boundaries, chief officer responsibilities, employee discipline, mutual aid legal status, and employment history record maintenance under the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Act.

Public bodies must present written compliance documentation to county prosecutors and sheriffs/police chiefs before approval is granted, with copies filed with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.

County prosecutors and sheriffs/police chiefs may unanimously withdraw approval if minimum standards are not maintained, but must hold at least 2 public hearings in the agency's jurisdiction before withdrawal.

Law enforcement officers granted police powers must meet minimum employment standards established by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Act; effective date January 2, 2017.
