HB 5684 Summary

• Removes "statistics" from the list of standalone mathematics courses that satisfy high school graduation requirements, though students may still take statistics as their fourth mathematics credit alongside algebra I, geometry, and either algebra II or statistics.

• Allows students to partially or fully fulfill the algebra II requirement through department-approved career and technical education programs in fields such as electronics, machining, construction, welding, engineering, computer science, or renewable energy.

• Requires all high school students to complete at least one mathematics course during their final year of enrollment.

• Allows specialty schools designated by the superintendent of public instruction (up to 15 total) to be exempt from certain English language arts and social science credit requirements if they meet performance criteria including a graduation rate of at least 85% and 75% postsecondary enrollment.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment.
