Requires school districts and public school academies to provide at least 40 hours of sustainability and environmental literacy instruction during each grade level (9-12) for students entering grade 8 in 2016 or later, with completion mandatory for high school diploma award.

Mandates instruction cover ten specific topics including earth systems interaction, matter and energy movement, ecological concepts, human impact on natural systems, health effects, social decision-making influences, sustainability principles, authentic application contexts, evolving sustainability concepts, and community-based decision-making and environmental stewardship.

Requires state board to ensure science curriculum standards for grades K-12 include learning objectives consistent with sustainability and environmental literacy instruction, age-appropriately modified.

Takes effect 90 days after enactment into law.
