Estimated to occur in 1 in 1,000 births, though prevalence is believed to be higher with increased MRI use; there are four different types differing by herniation severity.

No cure exists for Chiari malformation, though posterior fossa decompression surgery may offer symptom relief for some patients.

Encourages Michigan citizens to educate themselves and support those affected by Chiari malformation and related conditions including hydrocephalus, tethered spinal cord, and syringomyelia.
