Senate Bill 857 Summary

• Amends the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act to redefine "national holiday" to exclude Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, and Easter.

• Allows local units of government to regulate ignition and discharge of consumer fireworks on days preceding, during, and after national holidays (as newly defined), with exceptions allowing unrestricted use on those three days.

• Permits local units of government with population of 75,000+ or located in counties with 750,000+ population to enact ordinances regulating consumer fireworks sales from tents and requiring sales at permanent buildings or structures.

• Increases the maximum civil fine for violations of local fireworks ordinances from $500 to $1,000 per violation.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment.
