Motor vehicle manufacturers may participate in Statewide Automated Vehicle Evaluation (SAVE) projects by self-certifying that they meet specified requirements including operating an automated driving system, crash notification technology, and data recording capability.

Participating vehicles must be owned or controlled by the manufacturer, comply with all applicable state and federal laws, and be capable of operating in compliance with Michigan traffic and motor vehicle laws.

Manufacturers may commence SAVE projects immediately after notifying the Department of Motor Vehicles and specifying geographical boundaries, which can include municipal areas, university campuses, senior developments, or similar locations.

During automated driving system operation, the system is legally deemed the driver or operator and is responsible for traffic law compliance; the manufacturer must assume liability for incidents where the automated driving system is at fault.

Manufacturers must maintain incident records, provide safety and efficacy summaries to the Department and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and disclose data handling practices in a public privacy statement.
