SB-1019 Summary

• Board of Nursing may issue specialty certification to registered professional nurses as nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, or nurse practitioners who complete advanced training and demonstrate competency through examination.

• Certified nurse anesthetists may provide anesthesia and analgesia services including developing care plans, performing assessments and procedures, and selecting/prescribing/administering anesthetic agents when part of a patient-centered care team under physician supervision.

• Nurse anesthetist services limited to hospital inpatient/outpatient facilities, surgical centers, physician offices, or facilities providing diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, or cystoscopy services during preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative, obstetrical, interventional, or diagnostic service periods.

• Nurse anesthetist prescription authority restricted to pharmacological agents for administration during anesthesia/analgesia services only and does not extend to patient take-home medications outside the facility.

• No requirement for new or additional third-party reimbursement or worker's compensation benefits for anesthesia services provided by certified nurse anesthetists; effective 90 days after enactment.
