School buses may be equipped with a flashing advisory sign on the rear that displays warning messages to approaching motorists about traffic hazards.

The rear sign must be 23.5 by 8.75 by 1.5 inches, sealed and weathertight, and display amber messages "caution" and "stopping" when amber lights activate and red messages "stop" or "do not pass" when red lights activate.

Warning messages on the rear sign must be clearly visible from 500 feet in direct sunlight with a minimum 15-degree viewing angle on each side.

An electronic warning sign may be placed on the front of the school bus below the windshield if a rear sign is already installed, and it must be wired only to amber and red safety lights.

Signs must automatically energize when hazard lights activate, comply with existing safety requirements, and automatically de-energize when the service door closes.
