Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, school districts, intermediate school districts, and public school academies must ensure schools are not in session on the Friday before Labor Day or on any Monday or Friday in August.

Schools are exempt from calendar restrictions if a collective bargaining agreement providing a complete school calendar was in effect as of the bill's effective date and does not comply with the new requirements, until that agreement expires.

Year-round schools and international baccalaureate academies providing 1,160 hours of instruction annually are exempt; schools beginning year-round operations after the bill's effective date may apply to the superintendent of public instruction for a waiver.

Intermediate school districts may provide programs and services according to constituent districts' or public school academies' calendars if those calendars begin before Labor Day under existing exemptions.

Professional development for school personnel may still be conducted before Labor Day, and the bill does not apply to schools operating grades 6-12 at a single site with advanced placement as their curriculum capstone, ending the semester with the AP examination period.
