Contractors cannot place construction liens on residential property unless they have a written contract with the owner or lessee and all amendments are also in writing.

Contracts must include a statement in readable type disclosing licensing requirements for residential builders, electricians, plumbing contractors, and mechanical contractors under Michigan law.

Contracts must state whether the contractor is licensed and include the contractor's license number if licensing is required for the improvement.

Licensed contractors must display their license and personal identification when recording a lien claim in person, or attach copies if submitting by other means.

Registers of deeds cannot accept lien claims from required-license contractors unless proper license and identification documentation is displayed or attached; violations are misdemeanors punishable by up to 90 days imprisonment or $500 fine.
