Department of Education must develop or adopt a professional development course on mental health first aid within 1 year of the bill's effective date, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services.

Course instruction must include identifying risk factors and warning signs for mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, eating disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.

Course must also cover strategies for assisting individuals in mental health crises, including assessing risk, respectful listening, providing support, and connecting individuals to professional help and resources.

Mental health first aid course may be counted toward professional development requirements already mandated under section 1527.

Bill takes effect 90 days after enactment.
