HB 5533 Summary

• Until December 31, 2022, each political party may nominate 2 candidates for University of Michigan regents, Michigan State University trustees, and Wayne State University governors; beginning January 1, 2023, this increases to 4 candidates for each board.

• Until December 31, 2022, 2 members of each university governing board are elected at general elections; beginning January 1, 2023, 4 members of each board must be elected.

• Beginning at the 2020 general election, terms of office for members elected to university governing boards are reduced from 8 years to 4 years.

• Changes legislative language from "shall be" to "is" and "shall begin" to "begins" for technical clarification of term provisions.

• Repeals 1963 PA 23 (MCL 390.691-390.693) and makes the bill contingent on passage of House Joint Resolution EE as a constitutional amendment.
