Law enforcement agencies must report unclaimed stolen or abandoned property to county/city/village/township boards after 6 months and request authority to dispose of it.

Stolen bicycles may be donated to state-licensed charitable organizations, and other reusable property may be donated to eligible recipients (government entities, schools, nonprofits, etc.) that will use the property.

Before sale or donation, the law enforcement agency must publish notice in a newspaper at least 5 days in advance, allowing owners to claim property during that period.

Sale proceeds, after deducting costs and appraisal fees, must be deposited into the general fund; owners have 6 months after sale to file claims and receive proceeds if they prove ownership.

Law enforcement agencies are immune from liability for disposing of property under this act, and prior related statutes (1959 PA 54) are repealed.
