HB 5822 Summary

• Amends 2014 PA 462 to expand opioid antagonist (naloxone) access to include state police officers, in addition to local peace officers.

• Authorizes the Department of State Police to purchase and possess opioid antagonists and distribute them to trained state police officers for responding to opioid overdoses.

• Permits state police officers and peace officers to administer opioid antagonists to individuals experiencing opioid-related overdoses if the officer has received proper training and has reason to believe an overdose is occurring.

• Extends civil and criminal immunity to the Department of State Police, law enforcement agencies, state police officers, and peace officers who possess or administer opioid antagonists in good faith, except in cases of gross negligence.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment into law.
