House Bill 6154 Summary

• Amends Michigan Vehicle Code Section 904 to modify penalties for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended or revoked license, or without ever obtaining a license.

• Adds exception to automatic license suspension penalties: persons with only one current suspension under section 321a who violate during that suspension are exempt from additional suspension (applies only once per lifetime).

• Clarifies that the 30-day suspension imposed for indefinite suspensions or denied applications does not apply if the violation occurred while suspended under sections 321a, 511, or 732a.

• Maintains criminal penalties for violations: up to 93 days imprisonment or $500 fine for first offense; up to 1 year imprisonment or $1,000 fine for subsequent offenses; enhanced felony penalties if death or serious bodily injury results.

• Takes effect January 1, 2018.
