HB 6189 Summary

• Expands the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act to include home-schooled children as eligible students, allowing them to enroll in eligible college courses during high school with state-funded tuition support.

• Adds definition of "home-schooled child" as a child educated at home by parent or legal guardian in organized educational program covering core academic subjects.

• For home-schooled students and nonpublic school students, requires the Department of Treasury to pay eligible postsecondary institution charges (up to the prorated statewide average foundation allowance) rather than individual school districts.

• Allows home-schooled students to receive payment for postsecondary courses for high school credit or postsecondary credit, and permits nonessential elective courses to receive high school credit through special designation.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment into law.
