Requires owners, operators, or builders of residential structures with transient occupants (boarding houses, hotels, motels) newly constructed on or after December 1, 2009 to install at least one operational carbon monoxide device at each source point and in each room adjoining a source point.

Carbon monoxide devices must be battery-powered, plug-in with battery backup, wired into AC power with secondary battery backup, or connected to a control panel system, and must have an audible alarm.

Devices must be certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory to conform to Underwriters Laboratories standards.

Installers and owners/operators who install and maintain carbon monoxide devices according to manufacturer's instructions are not liable for the device's operation, maintenance, or effectiveness.

Defines "source point" as areas containing fossil-fuel-burning furnaces, boilers, or water heaters, but excludes fireplaces and space heaters alone.
