School district boards and public school academy boards shall provide age-appropriate and medically accurate instruction to pupils on warning signs and risk factors for suicide and depression, and medically accurate professional development for school personnel on the same topics.

Instruction and professional development must be designed to prevent fatal and nonfatal suicide behaviors among youth, increase pupil awareness of warning signs and risk factors, and improve access to prevention services for vulnerable youth groups.

School boards are encouraged to work with school personnel and local or state organizations specializing in suicide prevention, and the Department shall develop or select model programs such as the Michigan model for comprehensive school health education to make available to districts and academies.

School districts and public school academies shall notify parents using normal communication methods about the suicide prevention instruction provided, with failure to notify creating no cause of action or breach of legal duty.

The legislature shall provide funding to schools for any increased costs related to compliance, and the section is known as the "Chase Edwards law," effective 90 days after enactment.
