Senate Bill 619 Summary

• Amends Michigan's Revised School Code to change terminology from "sexually transmitted disease" to "sexually transmitted infection" throughout sex education provisions.

• Requires school districts offering sex education to establish a sex education advisory board with at least half of members being parents of students, including at least 2 co-chairs with at least 1 parent co-chair.

• Advisory board must establish program goals to reduce rates of teen sex, pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections; review instructional materials and methods; and evaluate program effectiveness at least every 2 years with reports available to parents.

• Prohibits the distribution of family planning drugs or devices in public schools or on school property, and specifies that abortion shall not be taught as a method of reproductive health.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment, contingent upon Senate Bill 620 also being enacted into law.
