Senate Bill No. 1099 Summary

• Amends the Aeronautics Code of Michigan (1945 PA 327, MCL 259.80f) to clarify prohibitions on weapons in sterile areas of commercial airports.

• Prohibits individuals from possessing or carrying firearms, explosives, knives with any blade length, razors, box cutters, or dangerous weapons in sterile airport areas.

• Establishes misdemeanor penalties of up to 1 year imprisonment or $1,000 fine for violations; elevates to felony (up to 10 years imprisonment or $10,000 fine) if violation involves boarding an aircraft, placing items on aircraft, or committing a felony.

• Exempts peace officers, Department of Corrections employees, U.S. military members on duty, National Guard members, airport security personnel, court officers, and airline/airport employees authorized by their employers.

• Redefines "sterile area" to mean airport portions providing passenger access to boarding aircraft where access is controlled by the Transportation Security Administration or aircraft operators through security screening procedures.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment.
