Senate Bill 1174 Summary

• Establishes the "Suicide Fatality Review Act" to allow Michigan counties to create suicide fatality review task forces for reviewing suicides within their jurisdiction.

• Requires each task force to consist of at least 7 members representing diverse fields including medical examiners, law enforcement, mental health professionals, healthcare providers, local health departments, suicide loss survivors, school districts, higher education institutions, and organizations serving older adults.

• Designates all information obtained by task forces as confidential and exempt from public disclosure, Freedom of Information Act requests, and subpoena, with limited exceptions for crime investigations, child protection reports, and prosecuting attorneys or law enforcement agencies.

• Permits task forces to release de-identified and aggregated data, analysis, and process improvement findings to the public and health officials to improve public health.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment into law.
