• Replaces "shall" with "must" throughout Section 1279g regarding the Michigan Merit Examination to strengthen mandatory language for examination administration and requirements.

• Removes the workforce readiness assessment component (formerly subsection 2(b)) that measured reading and mathematics skills for employer employment decisions.

• Adds Section 1279i prohibiting the state department from requiring administration of workforce readiness assessments while allowing school districts and public school academies to voluntarily offer them with state reimbursement.

• Requires the department to submit annual reports by June 1st (beginning June 1, 2020) detailing the number of districts/academies offering workforce readiness assessments and the number of pupils participating.

• Maintains all other Michigan Merit Examination requirements including English language arts, mathematics, reading, science, and social studies components, with specified quality standards and scoring procedures.
