HB 4826 Summary

• Requires all school districts and public school academies to include a program of instruction in free enterprise and entrepreneurship in their grade 8 social studies curriculum beginning in the 2019-2020 school year.

• Permits schools to offer the entrepreneurship instruction in other subject areas or grade levels in addition to grade 8 social studies.

• Mandates the Department of Education develop or adopt model programs by June 1, 2019, including "Michigan's Entrepreneurial Spirit," that schools may use to meet the requirement.

• Specifies that entrepreneurship programs must be project-based and cover business vocabulary, notable entrepreneurs, goal-setting activities, business basics (including taxes and business types), and student business plan creation.

• Makes technical changes to Section 1278 by replacing "shall" with "must" throughout and adding cross-references to the new entrepreneurship instruction requirements in the model core academic curriculum content standards.
