Bill Summary: HB 4924

• Prohibits knowingly importing, manufacturing, selling, or installing counterfeit supplemental restraint system (airbag) components, nonfunctional airbags, or non-compliant objects in motor vehicles.

• Prohibits knowingly selling or installing devices that cause a vehicle's diagnostic system to falsely indicate a properly functioning supplemental restraint system.

• Prohibits knowingly selling, leasing, or trading a motor vehicle to a consumer while knowing it contains counterfeit or nonfunctional airbag components.

• Establishes felony penalties of up to 4 years imprisonment and/or fines up to $10,000 for violations.

• Exempts motor vehicle dealership owners and employees without actual knowledge of counterfeit components and exempts research and development installations on vehicles not driven on public roadways; does not require dealerships to inspect vehicles for such components.
