HB 5132 Summary

• Allows individuals to use trotlines or juglines on inland lakes and rivers to take nongame fish and snapping turtles, subject to specified restrictions.

• Prohibits use of live bait with trotlines or juglines, limits users to a maximum of 10 trotlines, and requires lines to be set at least 600 feet away from dams.

• Requires trotlines and juglines to be marked with the owner's name, address, and telephone number in legible English; juglines must also have reflective markers for nighttime visibility.

• Mandates that users check all trotlines daily, remove caught fish and animals, and remove lines when not in use; juglines must be attended by or within sight of anglers at all times.

• Restructures MCL 324.48703 to list prohibited fishing methods (grab hooks, set lines, nets, explosives, and other unlawful devices) as separate provisions while maintaining existing regulations on rod and reel fishing limits.
