HB 5205 Summary

• Adds a $20.00 recreation passport fee option for individuals obtaining 2-year vehicle registrations under section 226(13) of Michigan vehicle code.

• Maintains existing $10.00 annual recreation passport fee for standard annual registrations and $5.00 fee for motorcycles, both subject to annual inflation adjustments.

• Requires registration applicants to elect whether to pay the recreation passport fee, which authorizes unlimited entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas, and state-operated public boating access sites.

• Directs the secretary of state to transfer recreation passport fee revenue monthly to the Department of Natural Resources for deposit per section 2045 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act.

• Requires the secretary of state to mark registration tabs or stickers distinctly for vehicles with paid recreation passport fees, in consultation with the Department of Natural Resources; takes effect 90 days after enactment contingent on passage of HB 5204.
