HB 5303 Summary

• Establishes licensure and regulatory framework for naturopathic physicians in Michigan under Part 186 of the Public Health Code.

• Permits licensed naturopathic physicians to order diagnostic tests and imaging, prescribe non-controlled substances and board-approved prescription drugs, administer therapies including botanical medicines and hydrotherapy, and perform minor office procedures.

• Prohibits naturopathic physicians from prescribing controlled substances, performing major surgery, using anesthetics, performing laser surgery, and claiming to practice other health professions without proper licensing.

• Creates an 11-member Board of Naturopathic Medicine composed of 6 naturopathic physicians, 1 MD/DO, 1 pharmacist, 1 chiropractor, and 2 public members to establish qualifications, examination standards, continuing education requirements, and a naturopathic formulary.

• Licenses expire 4 years from issuance and takes effect 90 days after enactment, contingent upon passage of HB 5302.
