HB 6241 Summary

• Adds definition of "electric sign" as fixed, stationary, or portable electrically illuminated equipment with words or symbols designed to convey information, excluding portable applications and recognized holiday residential signs using standard 110-volt plug connections.

• Establishes definition of "electrical energy supply agency" to include electric utilities, independent transmission companies, municipal electric utility systems, and electric cooperatives headquartered in Michigan.

• Allows unlicensed individuals to install, alter, maintain, or repair electric signs and related wiring under direct supervision of a licensed sign specialist, with a maximum ratio of 2 unlicensed to 1 licensed specialist enforced on a jobsite basis.

• Expands exemptions from electrical contractor licensing requirements to include work performed by electrical energy supply agencies on consumer premises for generation, transmission, distribution, or metering of electrical energy.

• Clarifies language throughout Section 737 regarding licensing exceptions and updates references to "electrical energy supply agency" in place of outdated "electric light and power utility" terminology.
