SB 482 Summary

• Expands whistleblower protections under the Whistleblowers' Protection Act to include employees reporting violations to the press or the state employee ombudsman, in addition to public bodies.

• Adds definition of "state employee ombudsman" to the act and clarifies that employees are protected when requested by the state employee ombudsman to participate in investigations or inquiries.

• Requires employees alleging violations to show by clear and convincing evidence they reported or were about to report violations to a public body, the press, or the state employee ombudsman.

• Allows civil actions for injunctive relief or actual damages (including attorney fees) to be brought within 90 days of the alleged violation in the circuit court of the relevant county.

• Takes effect 90 days after enactment, contingent upon Senate Bill 481 of the 100th Legislature also being enacted into law.
