SB1042 Summary

• Suspends the requirement to administer the Michigan Merit Examination for the 2020-2021 school year for school districts and public school academies, though they may still choose to administer it.

• Allows home school students and nonpublic school students to take the Michigan Merit Examination, but exempts school districts from providing it to home school students in 2020-2021 if the district is not administering it to its own pupils.

• Makes technical changes to existing Michigan Merit Examination requirements by changing mandatory language ("shall") to permissive language ("must") throughout the statute.

• Adds a new section exempting public school academies from mandatory assessment requirements using either the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) or the Michigan Merit Examination for the 2020-2021 school year.
