SB 1099 Summary

• Amends the Pupil Transportation Act to add definitions for "school district" and "stop-arm camera system," which captures photographs or video of vehicles that fail to stop for school buses or pass them illegally.

• Authorizes school buses to be equipped with stop-arm camera systems to document violations of Michigan Vehicle Code Section 682(1), which prohibits passing or failing to stop for school buses displaying alternately flashing red lights.

• Permits school districts to install and operate stop-arm cameras directly, contract with private vendors to install and operate them, or provide captured evidence to local or state law enforcement agencies.

• Ties effectiveness to passage of Senate Bills 1098 and 1100 of the 100th Legislature.
