SB 1174 Summary

• Superintendent of Public Instruction must not approve teacher preparation institutions unless they offer instruction on dyslexia characteristics and risk factors for decoding difficulties to all K-6 program students.

• Requires instruction on secondary consequences of dyslexia including reading comprehension problems, vocabulary gaps, and potential social-emotional difficulties.

• Mandates teaching of evidence-based interventions grounded in structured literacy and cognitive science principles for students with dyslexia and those at risk for decoding difficulties.

• Requires instruction on accommodations for dyslexia and underlying risk factors, plus methods for developing schoolwide and classroom support systems using multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework.

• Bill takes effect only if Senate Bills 1172, 1173, and 1175 are also enacted into law.
